I moved to the UK when I was 11 years old and have grown to appreciate it’s rich history and complex relationship with religion through the ages. Although I try not to debate the topic it’s difficult to deny the impact religion has had on architecture. Cities such as Rome or Medina exemplify the ways in which religious thinking can influence the look and feel of a place and if those initial creative inspirations come from a divine place, who am I to argue.

In the last few weeks I travelled around the country getting in touch with my roots and managed to visit the 4 cities that hold a dear place in my heart: Boston, Lincoln, Leeds and London. During my visit to Lincoln I had to take a little stroll around the famous Lincoln Cathedral. It was reputedly the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549) and it’s Gothic design looms over the city to this day.

Recently I never seem to settle on a style for my lookbooks, darting from casual street wear to smart and clean suits but at the end of the day you should wear what feels natural to you. The Zip Hooded Ralph Lauren Sweatshirt which I grabbed from Infinities was a perfect fit for the stroll while my ever present Withings smartwatch kept reminding me to take it easy on the infamous Steep Hill.

Flower In The Crannied Wall

Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies,
I hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower—but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all,
I should know what God and man is.

Behind the Cathedral there is a monument to Alfred Tennyson, a Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland with the following poem titled ‘Flower in the crannied wall’ written on it. The poem challenged my way of thinking about beauty and how beauty is attributed rather than gained. It also encouraged me to look past the superficial and see real beauty within everything 🙂 What does the poem say to you?
